Level: start low, build up from 1 to 9 · Sessions: 3 a week for the first 4 weeks · Sun: none for 24 hours after a session

Your first session

Do a skin test before your first session, and give each new area one test flash before you treat it.
How to skin test
  1. Pick a small patch of skin near the area you want to treat.
  2. Shave, clean and dry the skin.
  3. Give that spot one flash on the lowest level.
  4. Check your skin after 30 minutes. Any itching, redness, swelling or blisters? Do not carry on. Wait 24 hours and test again, and do not use the device if it happens again.
  5. All clear? We suggest waiting 24 hours before your first full session.
1 Shave. Shave the area first, ideally with foam in the shower. Hair longer than 1 mm can heat up on the skin and singe.
2 Clean and dry. Your skin should be completely dry, with no lotion, perfume, sunscreen, oil or make-up. No gel is needed. Check the flash window is clean.
3 Power on. Plugged-In model: connect the power cord and it switches on by itself. Cordless model: press and hold the side power button for 3 seconds.
4 Choose a mode. On the main menu, use the left and right side buttons to pick a mode. Infinite suits most sessions.
5 Set the level and the cooling. In the mode, the left and right buttons change the energy level. Start low the first time. The snowflake button turns the ice cooling on and sets how cold it is.
6 Goggles on. Wear the goggles from the box, and never use it near your eyes.
7 Flash. Hold the flash window flat and upright on your skin and press the flash button. Give each area 1 to 2 flashes. For legs and arms, hold the flash button for 3 to 5 seconds to switch to Auto and glide slowly, letting each flash overlap the last a little.
8 Cool and move on. After each area, rest the ice panel on the skin for about 30 seconds, then move to the next area. When you have finished, switch off before you unplug.

Power and charging

Plugged-In model (blue)Runs from the mains. Connect the power cord and it switches on by itself. Your session can be as long as you need
Cordless model (black)Has a lithium battery, so you can use it without the cable. To switch on, press and hold the side power button for 3 seconds
  • Listen for the fan. When you switch on, you should hear a gentle hum. No hum? Do not use it. Contact us.
  • Switch off before you unplug. Pulling the plug while it is on can damage it.
  • Never leave it switched on unattended. Turn it off as soon as you finish.
  • Room temperature. Use it in a room between 0 and 45°C. If you bring it from a cold place into a warm one (a change of more than 20°C), leave it switched off for about 2 hours first.

Modes, levels and cooling

InfiniteFine control of the energy. Suits most people and most sessions
Quick FlashFlashes faster than the other modes, for quick whole-body sessions
Body PartsSet up for different parts of the body. After each flash, lift the device off and wait for the full-energy icon in the top-right of the screen before the next
DeepFor thick, coarse hair
Skin RejuvenationA light mode for the skin rather than hair.
Left and right side buttonsOn the main menu: choose a mode. In a mode: change the energy level
Snowflake buttonIce cooling on, and how cold. More snowflakes on screen means colder. No snowflake means cooling is off
Flash button, pressOne flash (Manual mode)
Flash button, hold 3 to 5 secondsAuto mode. The auto icon shows, and it flashes whenever the window touches your skin
Side power button, hold 3 secondsSwitches on the Cordless model

Energy levels. Higher levels feel warmer and work better on thick, coarse hair. Start low the first time, and turn it up as your skin gets used to it.

Manual or Auto? Manual for small areas such as the underarms and upper lip. Auto for large areas such as the arms and legs.

Ice cooling. If your skin feels too warm, stop for about 10 seconds to let the flash window cool.

Will it work for me?

It will not work on grey, white, red or light-blonde hair. IPL works on the pigment in darker hair, and these colours have too little of it. Two quick checks tell you if the Deparee is right for you.

1 · Your hair colour?
✓Black, dark brown, brown or light brown: enough pigment for the light to work on
✗Blonde, red, grey or white: too little pigment, so it will not give results
2 · Your skin tone?
✓Fair to medium (Fitzpatrick I to IV): suitable
✗Dark brown or black: not suitable. Your manual says not to use it on naturally dark skin

The colour swatches on page 4 of your manual show the same: the four lighter skin tones and the four darker hair colours are suitable.

Where you can use it: legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, upper lip, chin and most body areas. For your back, ask someone to help. See "Safety: please read first" for the places it must never go.

Is IPL right for you? Suitable skin tones I to IV and hair colours black to light brown; not for skin types V and VI or blonde, red, grey and white hair.

Is IPL right for you?

Skin tones I to IV and black to light brown hair respond to IPL. Skin types V and VI, and blonde, red, grey or white hair, do not.

How often, and when you'll see results

Weeks 1 to 43 times a week
Weeks 5 to 8Twice a week
After week 8Once a month

Hair grows in cycles, and the light only works on hair in its growing stage, so keep to the schedule. Adjust the level and how often you treat to suit how thick your hair is.

When will I see results? Everyone is different. Many customers tell us they notice thinner, slower-growing hair within 2 to 4 weeks.

How long each area takes (averages from the maker's tests; yours may differ):

Upper lip60 seconds
Underarms60 seconds
Bikini line60 seconds
Arms60 seconds
Calves2 minutes
Back2 minutes
Thighs3 minutes

After your session, and cleaning

  • It is normal for the skin to feel slightly warm and look a little red.
  • Keep water off the treated skin for 6 hours. After that, a moisturiser is fine.
  • Skip perfume, face masks and scrubs with beads on treated skin.
  • Do not put antiperspirant on your underarms straight after a session.
  • Keep treated skin out of the sun for 24 hours, and take care in the sun for the whole course.
Sun and fake tan. Your manual says: do not treat skin straight after sunbathing; keep treated skin out of the sun for 24 hours after each session; avoid the sun during your course, as sunburn then takes over a week to heal; and do not use fake tan or sunbeds during your course. Our manual gives no exact wait before a session. The usual IPL advice is to wait 4 weeks after sunbathing and 2 weeks after fake tan.

Cleaning. Clean it before and after each session. Switch off and unplug first. Wipe the flash window with a soft, clean, dry cloth. No wet wipes, no running water or dishwasher, and no scourers, toothpaste or solvents such as acetone.

Storing. Keep the device and adapter dry. Store it back in its box or a clean case, somewhere dry and dust-free, between -10 and 60°C, and out of reach of children under 15.

Your questions, answered

Does it hurt?

Most customers tell us it does not. The built-in ice cooling keeps your skin comfortable, and you can set both the energy level and the cooling. Start low and work up as your skin gets used to it.

When will I see results?

Everyone is different. Many customers tell us they notice thinner, slower-growing hair within 2 to 4 weeks of regular sessions. Keep to the schedule: 3 times a week for weeks 1 to 4, twice a week for weeks 5 to 8, then once a month.

What skin tones and hair colours does it work on?

It works best on fair to medium skin (Fitzpatrick I to IV) with darker hair. It will not work on blonde, red, grey or white hair, because there is too little pigment for the light to find. It is not suitable for dark brown or black skin.

Which mode should I use?

Infinite suits most sessions. Quick Flash is fastest for large areas, Body Parts is set up for different parts of the body, and Deep is for thick, coarse hair. Use Manual flashes for small areas and Auto for arms and legs.

Which body areas can I use it on?

Legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, upper lip, chin and most body areas. Never use it around your eyes or on your eyebrows, nipples, tattoos or moles.

Do I need to use gel?

No. The Deparee cools the skin itself. Gel or other liquids can get inside and damage it, so keep your skin clean and dry.

Why is there a burning smell?

The light has singed hair on the surface of the skin. Shave closely before every session and the smell should stop.

What is different about the Cordless model?

The Cordless model (black) has a lithium battery, so you can use it without the cable. The Plugged-In model (blue) runs from the mains, so your session can be as long as you need. Both have the same modes, levels and cooling. The manual gives the Plugged-In model up to 28 J per flash and the Cordless model up to 24 J.

Does it need new cartridges?

No. The lamp is built in and gives unlimited flashes, with no cartridges to replace.

Can I use it after sun or fake tan?

Do not treat skin straight after sunbathing, and keep treated skin out of the sun for 24 hours after each session. Do not use fake tan or sunbeds during your course. Our manual gives no exact wait before a session. The usual IPL advice is to wait 4 weeks after sunbathing and 2 weeks after fake tan.

What warranty is included?

The Deparee has a 1-year warranty from the date you bought it. If anything goes wrong, contact us and we will arrange a repair or a replacement.
